Weigand, Frederick Charles

Frederick Charles Weigand,79, died Friday, January 25 at Brian Health and Rehabilitation Center, Brevard, N.C.

He was born in Herkimer, N.Y. and raised on his father's farm near Newport. As a youngster, Fred walked with his sister to the local one-room rural school until both transferred to the central high school. He went on to Syracuse University of New York forestry school at Cranberry Lake. After graduation, Fred served in the US Army, trained as a demolitions technician and then deployed to Korea.

Having learned surveying along with forestry, Fred worked at highway construction, helped build the Messina locks on the St. Lawrence Seaway project, then functioned as a dredge crew chief in New York Harbor. He trained and was certified as a NeuroLinguistic Hypnotherapy Practitioner, retiring from practice in the 1980s. He volunteered with the fire police in Fair Haven, NJ, serving both as captain and as president of the Fire Police Association in. After retiring to Oriental, NC, volunteered as a driver to transport people to medical appointments. He served as a construction crew manager with Pamlico County Habitat for Humanity, and was a Hope Clinic volunteer. He worked to re-establish the Oriental United Methodist Church tape and CD ministry; recording, reproducing and delivering Sunday service tapes or CDs to shut-ins and nursing home residents. Fred enjoyed visiting and chatting with those accepting sermon tapes, and he devoted himself to building the program until he could no longer do what was required.

He is survived by his wife Janice of Forest City, NC; sons Fred C. Weigand Jr. and wife Rhonda, of Hastings, NY and John Dickenson and wife Sue of Bayville, NJ; daughters Jayne Woodruff of Burlington, NC and Susan King and husband Dennis of Belle Meade, NJ; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Fred's life including family, church family and friends is to be Saturday, February 23 at 2 p.m. in Oriental United Methodist Church, in North Carolina. A social time will follow the service.

The family requests anyone wishing to make memorial gifts consider Fair Haven Fire Police Association, Oriental United Methodist Church, Hope Clinic, or Pamlico County Habitat for Humanity.
